Spiral Welded Pipe SAWH
Industrial production at the Zimnicea platform, with a capacity of ~50,000 t/year, for gas, oil, water transport and large-scale structural applications.
Production parameters
The SAWH production line in Zimnicea covers a wide range of diameters and wall thicknesses, configured for energy infrastructure, fluid transport and industrial construction projects.
Request a quoteIntegrated production at a single industrial location
Comtech's production platform in Zimnicea brings together SAWH pipe manufacturing, quality control, surface coatings and logistics in a coherent industrial flow.
The manufacturing process starts from low alloy carbon steel coils, which are uncoiled, prepared and spirally formed, with internal and external welding performed by submerged arc welding (SAW).
This method ensures consistent weld quality, high productivity and the ability to cover a wide range of diameters and wall thicknesses according to each project's requirements.
Integrating production with non-destructive testing, dimensional inspection, mechanical laboratory and external and internal coating capabilities allows Comtech to deliver finished, tested and certified products directly from the platform.
Road, rail and river connections (the Danube port of Zimnicea) complete the logistical advantage of the platform.
Manufacturing and product certification standards
Comtech's SAWH production complies with an extensive set of European and international standards covering requirements for pressure pipes, structural pipes and fluid transport pipes.
- EN 10217-1 – Welded pressure pipes, non-alloy steels
- EN 10217-3 – Welded pressure pipes, fine grain steels
- EN 10217-5 – Submerged arc welded pipes
- EN 10219-1, EN 10219-2 – Cold-formed welded structural profiles and pipes
- EN 10224 – Pipes for water transport
- API 5L PSL1 – Pipes for gas and oil transport
- API 5L / ISO 3183 PSL2 – Pipes with extended technical requirements
Fields of use
SAWH pipes produced by Comtech are used in energy infrastructure, utilities, construction and industrial projects in Romania and the region.
Natural gas transport
Gas transmission and distribution pipelines, including projects for transmission and distribution operators such as Transgaz and Delgaz Grid.
Oil and petroleum product transport
Pipelines for crude oil and petroleum product transport, compliant with API 5L requirements and applicable European standards.
Water and utilities transport
Pipes for water supply, sewage, irrigation and district heating systems, compliant with EN 10224 and client requirements.
Construction and structures
Structural pipes for foundations, piles, load-bearing structures and industrial applications, compliant with EN 10219.
Infrastructure and special projects
Infrastructure projects requiring pipes with customized technical specifications, extended testing and complete certification.
Naval industry
Pipes for shipbuilding and marine applications, delivered to shipyards in Romania and the region.
Testing and inspection
Each SAWH pipe undergoes a complete cycle of non-destructive, hydrostatic and mechanical testing, integrated into the production flow.
Non-destructive testing (NDT)
- Online ultrasonic testing (on the production line)
- Offline ultrasonic testing (post-production)
- Radiographic examination (X-ray)
- Visual and dimensional inspection
Mechanical and hydrostatic testing
- Hydrostatic press – pressure testing per standards
- Mechanical laboratory – tensile, impact, bend tests
- Complete dimensional control
- Documentation and traceability for each batch
Logistical advantage: Zimnicea
Comtech's production platform in Zimnicea benefits from a strategic logistical position, with access to three modes of transport, enabling flexible and efficient deliveries both domestically and for export.
Transport modes
- Road transport – direct access to the national road network
- Rail transport – connection to the CFR network
- River transport – Zimnicea Danube port
Solutions for hydrogen transport
Comtech has completed the evaluation process under ASME B31.12 Option A for the manufacture of SAWH pipes intended for hydrogen and natural gas–hydrogen blend transport.
ASME B31.12 Option A Assessment
The assessment covers production capability, quality control, testing and material traceability, demonstrating compliance with the specific requirements for hydrogen transport applications.
